Recovery Devices (Compression · Lymphatic · Percussion)

Grade B — Subjective recovery and edema reduction are well-established; longevity claims outrun the data.

The evidence

Sequential pneumatic compression (Ballancer-style suits) has clinical-grade RCT data for lymphedema, post-surgical edema, and DVT prevention. Consumer percussion devices (Theragun, Hypervolt) have subjective recovery and DOMS data; the longevity-marketing framing outruns the controlled-trial endpoints. Treat these as quality-of-life and athletic-recovery tools, not as primary longevity interventions.

Halacha — Shabbat
Electric compression and percussion devices cannot be activated on Shabbat. Pre-set timer cycles raise grama questions.

Same as Shabbat.
Choleh Status
Documented post-surgical lymphedema or DVT-prevention indications may rise to choleh-relevant.
Clinic Notes
Compression suits in clinics are usually private rooms; no mixed-gender concern.
Test Before Use
Compression: rule out untreated DVT, severe peripheral arterial disease, active cellulitis. Percussion: avoid over recent surgical sites and active inflammation.

Documented post-surgical use crossing Shabbat; recovery-frequency protocols.

FAQ

Ballancer vs. cheaper compression boots?

Ballancer's suits include the full lymphatic chain (legs, abdomen, arms in higher-end models) and use the calibrated sequential protocol from the lymphedema RCT base. Lower-cost leg-only boots are useful for athletic recovery but are not equivalent for clinical lymphatic indications.

Is Theragun a longevity device or a recovery device?

Recovery. DOMS reduction and subjective recovery are real; the 'fascia release' and 'longevity' marketing claims are weaker.
