Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Grade B — Tel Aviv telomere-and-senescence RCT pushed HBOT into longevity conversations; protocol matters.

The evidence

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy at 2.0 ATA delivered as 40 daily sessions in Shai Efrati's 2020 Tel Aviv trial produced telomere elongation and senescent-cell reduction in older adults. The protocol — 60-minute sessions, intermittent 100% O2 with 5-minute air breaks — is replicable and is now offered in dozens of US clinics. Lower-pressure (1.3 ATA) soft chambers used by most home buyers do not match the trial protocol; clinical-grade results require clinical-grade pressure.

OxyHealth Vitaeris 320

OxyHealth Vitaeris 320

FDA-cleared soft-shell chamber, the most-installed home HBOT unit in the US. Operates at 1.3–1.4 ATA — useful for recovery and mitochondrial endpoints, below the Efrati protocol pressure for senescence work.

Kosher Evidence Card
Halacha — Shabbat
Electronic compressor activation is a melacha. Pre-set timer cycles raise grama questions.
Halacha — Yom Tov
Same as Shabbat for elective use.
Choleh Status
Documented diagnoses like long COVID neurological sequelae, post-stroke rehab, and refractory wound healing may rise to choleh-relevant; discuss with your rav and physician together.
Clinic Notes
Most clinical chambers are single-occupancy — no mixed-gender concerns.
Test Before Use
ENT exam (Eustachian tube clearance); ophthalmology review if cataracts or recent eye surgery; pulmonary function if obstructive lung disease.

FAQ

Soft chamber 1.3 ATA vs. hard chamber 2.0 ATA — does it matter?

Yes. The Efrati telomere and senescence data is on 2.0 ATA hard-chamber protocols. Soft-chamber 1.3 ATA is useful for mitochondrial and recovery endpoints but is not interchangeable with the published longevity results.

How many sessions are needed?

Efrati's protocol is 40 sessions, 5 days a week for 8 weeks. Shorter courses produce some benefit but the dose-response in the trial was real.

Is mobile HBOT real?

Mobile chamber services exist for in-home concierge HBOT. Pricing varies widely — confirm the actual operating pressure before booking.
