Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

Grade B — Strong orthopedic RCT base; longevity claims outrun the data.

The evidence

PEMF has FDA clearance for non-union bone fractures and is supported by RCT data for osteoarthritis pain, post-surgical recovery, and sleep quality. The longevity, mitochondrial-biogenesis, and 'cellular charging' claims popular in marketing copy outrun the controlled-trial base — those mechanisms are real but the human longevity endpoints are not yet measured.

Halacha — Shabbat
Electronic activation is a melacha. Pre-set sessions still raise grama questions.

Documented orthopedic indications (non-union fracture, severe OA) may qualify; sleep and 'general wellness' use does not.

Clinic mats are single-user; no mixed-gender concern.
Test Before Use
Confirm no pacemaker, ICD, deep-brain stimulator, or other implanted electronics — absolute contraindication.
Ask Your Rav About
Choleh threshold for the specific indication; whether daily session protocols crossing Shabbat are halachically tractable.

FAQ

Pacemaker — really a hard no?

Yes. PEMF can interfere with implanted electronic devices. This is a documented absolute contraindication, not a precaution.

Why is this only Grade B?

The orthopedic and FDA-cleared indications are solid. The longevity claims that drive most consumer purchases are not yet supported by human trial endpoints. We grade on the longevity claim, not on the strongest indication.
